Yes, David!

To celebrate finishing our David Shannon author study, Ms. Crovo's class and Ms. Houston-Carr's class made pictures of David being a good library user. The illustrations were to be done in David Shannon's style, bright colors, funny and pictures that take up the whole page. Below are the VoiceThreads they created about their pictures. (Sorry for the background noise!)

Website Evaluation Tools

5th graders have been learning about the art of evaluating websites in order to decide if they are a reliable source of information. To begin this unit 5th graders were tricked with a fake website about explorers. This website looked professional and had some accurate information, but upon further exploration students began realizing that the website talks about how Columbus kept in touch through email and other crazy facts. We then began talking about the 5W's of website evaluation and why it is important to evaluate a website before you use it. Next, groups of students came up with tools to use to keep the 5W's in mind when using the web. They were able to do pretty much any type of tool we could find the materials for. The results were very creative! This VoiceThread lets them explain their tools.

March Madness Author Challenge Championship

Can't say that I am surprised by the two authors in the championship match up! Next week each class will get to vote for their favorite author. Stay tuned- results will be posted next Friday!

March Madness Author Challenge 2012

This year as an additional way to incorporate reading into the NCAA March Madness Tournament the library is holding a Peirce Favorite Author Challenge. Sixteen authors were selected and grouped into 4 categories: Funny Authors, Author/Illustrators, Tales Authors (folk, fairy, tall) and Early Reader Authors. So far we have completed the first round as well as one match up from our second round. Sadly, David Shannon was eliminated today by Mo Willems. Who do you think will win the whole tourney?

Ms.Mitchell's Class Insect Book

Over the past several weeks Ms. Mitchell's K/1 class has been hard at work on creating a book full of facts on insects. We began this project by gathering information on insects, which they had also been learning about in class. In library class we were learning about ABC books, so we used an ABC book format to create our book. We used a database (Capstone's Pebble Go) to find facts about bugs. We then created pictures of the bugs using the computer program KidPix. Finally we imported our book into VoiceThread so we could read our facts and share it with you. Please feel free to leave more comments on our book.
